No Need to Replace Your Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo Mail Account – But also think Opolis!

Back in October 2009 the BBC and several UK and international newspapers reported on a massive security breach: Millions of Hotmail customers were advised to change their passwords, a warning which was later extended to users of Email services including Gmail and Yahoo Mail. Alone in the United Kingdom up to 21 million people and businesses using Hotmail services were warned of being potentially at risk of being defrauded after passwords were acquired illegally.

It seemed that around 10,000 passwords were obtained by hackers. These created a fake website looking like the one of Hotmail to “convince” users to enter their Email address and password: A procedure also known as a 'phishing' scam. Fears immediately spread that information provided by users unaware of the scam could be used fraudulently to access Email accounts and – de facto - steal personal information, such as credit card account details.

The major Email application providers were quick in responding: Reportedly password resets were forced by Gmail who pointed out that this issue was not amid to a breach of Gmail security, but rather a scam scheme. The other providers reacted in a similar manner.

Email services such as provided by Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo have been and will be very popular going forward, foremost as they are easy to use and quickly set up, even without any further identification. - Security seems an ongoing issue, though, foremost as messages are usually not sent in encrypted mode via these applications; neither are messages interim stored in encrypted mode on – what can be described as – mediocre secure servers on an Email´s path from the sender to the recipient.

Launched in March 2010, Opolis Secure Mail and Document Messaging Service (http://www.opolis.eu) has taken an entirely different approach: Opolis is also free, but focuses exclusively on the transmission of confidential mails and documents in encrypted mode. Providing point-to-point Email security for corporate and private users, Opolis does not aim to replace Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo. As a matter of fact, an Opolis user may still arrange a meeting for a chat over a cup of coffee or send photos from last weekend via Gmail. However, any confidential information, such as documents, would only be sent via Opolis.

Opolis provides “Power to the Sender”: Hence, the sender has always full authority over what the recipient is allowed to do with a message and is empowered to monitor the entire path of a message. For example, the sender decides whether the recipient may copy, print, respond to or forward a message to another Opolis user or not. And, the sender is also able to monitor how the recipient has further processed the received message, such as – if allowed – to whom it was forwarded. Finally, neither can Opolis messages be manipulated or falsified.

Since its launch in March hundreds of users have already taken advantage of its free service according to Opolis. The Opolis mail client is running under both, Windows as well as Apple. Several language versions, such as English, German and Czech are already available with Russian coming next.
