Organic waste as a source of natural gas

Freie-PM.de: Even waste has a value. With the success of recycling, this knowledge in recent decades has generally prevailed. However, the fact that organic waste has a considerable value as an energy supplier, is less familiar to the public. Of organic waste, valuable methane is generated through anaerobic digestion.

At Demetrion we have developed a method of heat-induced hydrolysis, increasing the biogas yield of organic waste up to 50 %. Organic waste becomes a natural gas supplier. Worldwide organic is simply deposited in more than 90% of cases. In addition it is unsorted spent and compacted into a pit. Due to the compaction in the landfill, the organic portion of waste anaerobically ferments slowly. This however creates energetically valuable methane, an excellent energy carrier, fuel, and the main component of natural gas. The problem with this landfill gas: if it is not used for energy recovery by incineration but just only released into the atmosphere, so it is a very harmful greenhouse gas. The climate-damaging effect of methane is 21 times higher than carbon dioxide. When burned, however, it is an excellent source of clean energy. Both are good reasons why an attempt is made in a slow but steadily growing part of the world to collect this landfill gas.
For example, to burn in generators to produce electricity and heat, to replace natural gas for example for heating or in natural gas using automobiles. When collecting the gases, however, often a large part is lost, and the cost of landfill operators, to collect the gases subsequently, is much higher than the effect of separating all recyclable materials from the beginning and use the organic waste selectively. Companies such as Bluetechengineering bear in international projects in ensuring that the organic waste fraction is not deposited, but is largely recovered.

Composting and Energy instead of dumping it?
In some European countries such as the Benelux countries and Germany (in future also in Great Britain) the land filling of organic waste is already prohibited. In these countries the organic waste fraction is composted by law. This requires considerable energy expenditure with oxygen under steady aeration and circulation. Since this method is expensive, it makes more sense to use the organic waste directly as a feedstock for biogas production.
However, there were problems to solve: First, it is difficult to remove contaminants such as metals, plastics and minerals from the organic input.
Second, it is not easy, to convert indeed the entire organic waste into energy
With conventional technology, such as the so-called dry fermentation in"garages," with only the coarsest impurities separated and fermented organic matter only in about two-thirds. A third input of organic substances and their potential energy thus remain unused. Another disadvantage of the method is the exploitation of the digestate. On one hand there is leftover of compost that comes after the first fermentation by intensive cultivation, the other remains id liquid digestate. This will now often be recycled and must not largely given off as wastewater.

Thermally-induced hydrolysis
A solution for these problems is our biogas power plants in addition to modern methods of heat-induced hydrolysis. With that of Demetrion developed and patent-pending process it allows the plant to raise the methane gas yield, thereby increasing the energy output considerably in the method used in the cogeneration waste heat to heat the organic waste at temperatures up to 180 ° C. This produces suitable molecular structures of the bacteria which decompose organic matter to methane, otherwise would be unlocked. With the thermally induced hydrolysis can high degrees of degradation over 95% achieved. In addition Bluetechengineering also worked extensively on the sorting of waste and its treatment.
